I've written a Brian/Justin Christmas story. And I've been walking around all day thinking about whether or not I should post it. Because there are so many wonderful writers in this fandom and I feel like my writing isn't half as good as theirs. But then I figured what the hell, I might as well just post it. It's been a year since I last wrote anything, and I really want to post something again.

So here it is! Enjoy! :)

Title:
New Traditions
Fandom: Queer As Folk
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Rating: Probably PG-13
Word Count: 2,594
Warnings: This is pretty much pure fluff, so if you don't like that you should probably back away from this one ;)
Summary: Brian and Justin's first Christmas at Britin. Post season 5, slightly AU.
Author's Notes: In this story Justin never moved to New York, and he and Brian got married at the end of season 5 like they were planning to. They moved into Britin, and have lived there since their wedding. I've kinda chosen to make my own timeline, so in this story Brian and Justin got married in August, about 4 months before this story takes place.

Also, this is my first fic in this fandom, so yeah, please don't kill me if it sucks ;)

NEW TRADITIONS

Britin
December 25th, 3 am

Justin

He sat cross-legged on the floor in front of the Christmas tree. The lights from the tree were the only lights in the room, and they gave a warm and cozy atmosphere to the big living room.

Justin felt like a 5-year-old who is too excited to sleep and curious if Santa will come this year. Smiling at his own thoughts he looked up at the nicely decorated tree. He had stopped believing in Santa when he was seven and found his father’s Santa costume hidden in the basement, but the excitement over Christmas had never stopped. It had always been his favorite time of the year, and he had been looking forward to it for weeks already. He had spent a lot of time planning it, and had loved shopping for presents and decorating the house.

But right now he just felt overwhelmed. He woke up in the middle of the night and when he couldn’t sleep again he got out of bed and went downstairs, thinking about everything that had happened lately. He looked down at his hands and saw the wedding ring sparkle in the lights from the Christmas tree. How the hell did he end up here? How did his life turn out this way? He lived in this huge, amazing house, this palace. His future as an artist looked more promising than ever, and at the moment he was pretty stable financially thanks to Rage’s popularity and a couple of paintings he sold at an exhibition in November. And most importantly: He had Brian.

How was all this possible?

Brian

Brian walked slowly down the stairs in the quiet house. When he woke to find the bed empty next to him, he first waited a couple of minutes, thinking that Justin had gone to the bathroom. But five minutes passed and there was still no sign of Justin, so Brian decided to go downstairs to see what the hell he was doing up at 3 am in the morning.

There were Christmas decorations everywhere in the house. Any normal person would say that Justin had gone slightly over the top in his eagerness to get the house ready for Christmas. Brian thought he had gone far, far over the top. But he hadn’t had the heart to stop him. Justin was practically sparkling along with the decorations as he were putting them up, and even though Brian had attempted a “You know I don’t do Christmas” when Justin had brought home the decorations, he soon realized there was no point in trying to stop the guy.

“You do now”, was Justin’s grinning reply, and that was the end of that discussion.

But Brian unwillingly had to admit that he liked what Justin had done with their house. The guy had good taste, not that that was anything new. He had given their home a nice and warm atmosphere and for the first time in his life Brian found himself looking forward to Christmas. He and Justin were going to spend both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day alone at Britin, which was what they both wanted. They were only going over to Debbie’s later on Christmas Day to meet their friends and family.

When Brian didn’t find Justin in the kitchen or his studio, he tried the living room. Looking into the big room he saw the dark silhouette of a person on the floor in front of the Christmas tree and smiled. Even a child couldn’t love Christmas more than Justin did.

He moved slowly across the room over to where Justin sat on a big pillow. Justin was wearing his grey sweat pants and a t-shirt of Brian’s. Brian secretly loved it when Justin’s wore his clothes. Not that it was a big secret anymore, Justin had discovered it ages ago, which was why he constantly stole Brian’s clothes to use them himself.

Brian bent down next to him and put his arms on the younger man’s shoulders. Justin didn’t say anything, but he lifted his right arm to grab Brian’s hand on his shoulder. None of them said anything for a while, but a sniff from Justin made Brian lean forward a little to look at his face. He frowned a little when he saw traces of tears on Justin’s cheeks.

“Hey, is something wrong?” he said as he moved himself a bit and sat down on the floor so he was face to face with Justin. He lifted his right arm and used his thumb to wipe away the tears from Justin’s eyes.

Justin smiled a little, cheeks blushing, and shook his head.

“No, nothing’s wrong. I’m just being silly.”

Brian studied his face. With his pink cheeks and blond hair ruffled after sleeping, Justin looked younger than ever. Sometimes Brian forgot how young he really was; simply because it felt like Justin had been around forever. Brian couldn’t remember how life was like without him anymore. It was five years since they met, and a few months back they got married and moved into Britin. After that it was like they’d been on a never ending honeymoon, like they lived in their own little bobble. Brian had never been happier in his life, and he found himself wondering what the hell the little shit did to make him feel this way.

Things had happened pretty fast though, and seeing the tears in Justin’s face got Brian worried. Maybe Justin really hadn’t been ready for it all.

“Tell me”, he said softly, letting his hand brush through Justin’s hair. Justin gave another little smile, and after wiping the last of his tears from his face, he took both of Brian’s hands in his own.

“I was just thinking about everything that’s happened over the last months”, Justin began, and Brian stiffened a bit, but let the blonde continue.

“Six months ago I wouldn’t even in my wildest dreams have imagined this. That I would be here, in this big, amazing house that you bought for us. That I would be married to you, the love of my life. That I would sit in front of the Christmas tree late at night crying like a baby because I am so fucking happy.”

The last words came out as a half laugh, half choke, and Brian saw Justin’s eyes starting to fill again. He quietly took his young husband in his arms for a long, tight hug. If it wasn’t for the fact that Brian didn’t do sentimentality, he would be pretty close to choking up himself. Because Justin was right. The whole thing was pretty incredible. Who would have thought?

Justin

After kissing in front of the Christmas tree for several minutes, something Justin found incredibly romantic, Brian slowly pulled away and got to his feet.

“How about some presents?” he asked, reaching out his hand for Justin to take it. Justin grabbed it, and Brian pulled him to his feet.

“Now?” Justin asked. “It’s only 3 am. We’re supposed to open the presents in the morning, you know.”

Brian shrugged. “Why wait? You were the one who said we should start our own Christmas traditions. So let’s start one right now.”

“Giving each other presents in the middle of the night?”

“Why not?”

Justin smiled. Brian was right, why not? This Christmas was supposed to be all about the two of them, celebrating their new life, making their own traditions. And Justin was too curious about Brian’s present to wait much longer anyway.

“Okay then”, he said, grinning. “Want to go first?”

Brian nodded. “Wait here”, he said, letting go of Justin’s hand before he disappeared out of the room. Justin watched him leave, and started pacing around the room while he waited for Brian to return. Justin had given a lot of thought to what Brian might give him for Christmas. He’d even snooped around in Brian’s office here at the house to see if he could find some sort of clue. Brian had never really given him any Christmas presents before; he’d always said he didn’t believe in Christmas. But somehow Justin knew that this year would be different. Because everything else was so different now.

Something changed the night Babylon was bombed. That night Justin heard Brian say “I love you”, for the first time. The next day he proposed. And Justin realized Brian wasn’t the same man anymore. Well, to the rest of the world he probably was, but with Justin he was different. The new Brian was able to tell Justin how he felt, at least on occasion. The walls he always locked himself behind were starting to fade. He was more openly romantic and more attentive – he was being the perfect partner. Something that freaked Justin out a bit at first, but then he realized that this was a side of Brian that had always been there, he just hadn’t allowed himself to let it show. Brian had been let down by other people too many times in his life and had never been one to trust easily. Justin took Brian’s new openness as a sign of Brian finally being able to let go completely. It was Brian loving and trusting with all his heart.

So when Justin married Brian four months ago, he was doing it knowing that it was what Brian really, truly wanted. What they both wanted.

Brian returned after a few minutes with a big, white envelope in his hand. Justin stared at it, wondering if that was his present. After giving it a lot of thought over the last few days, he had come to the conclusion that Brian would most likely give him some new art supplies, something for the house or his studio, or maybe some new clothes. Brian was always criticizing his style of clothing, and Justin had on more than one occasion found a new sweater, a new shirt, or a new pair of jeans in his closet. But this envelope obviously carried none of those things.

Brian grinned when he saw the obvious curiosity in Justin’s face.

“The wait is over, Sunshine. No more sneaking around in my office when I’m not home.”

He smirked, and if Justin wasn’t so curious to know what was inside the envelope he might have been embarrassed by the fact that Brian could see through him so easily. He was certain he had left no traces in the office to reveal his actions.

Brian handed Justin the envelope, and Justin grabbed it, too curious to wait a minute longer. He tore it open and looked inside.

“Airline tickets?” He looked questioningly at Brian for a moment, and then he took the tickets out of the envelope and looked at them more closely. “To Italy?”

“I figured we could take a vacation next summer”, Brian said. “I was thinking four weeks in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan… as many museums and galleries you could possible wish for – within reasonable limits of course”, he added, before Justin’s head could start making too many plans. “And we obviously have to do some shopping, and…”

He was interrupted when Justin jumped into his arms and flung his arms around his neck, kissing him all over.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Justin’s face was nothing but one big smile as he gave Brian one kiss for each ‘thank you’. Finally pulling back he looked at Brian, who couldn’t stop smiling himself, seeing Justin’s excitement. “It’s always been my dream to go to Italy.”

“I know”, Brian smirked. “I have picked up a thing or two over the past few years.”

Brian

Justin spent a couple of minutes chatting on about all the amazing things they could do once they got to Italy. Brian thought Justin’s plans involved an overwhelming amount of art galleries and museums and historical places, and figured he had to occupy Justin enough to get him to drop at least a couple of those places. Which shouldn’t be a problem, he thought, grinning to himself.

When Justin was finished making plans, at least for now, he gave Brian one more thank you kiss, before grabbing his hands.

“Now it’s my turn”, he said and pulled Brian with him out of the living room. They headed towards Justin’s studio, which wasn’t a surprise to Brian. Justin had given him drawings or paintings several times before. Last Christmas he’d given him a painting for his office at Kinnetik. Once for his birthday he got a drawing of Gus. Brian was always happy when Justin gave him something he’d made; he’d always loved Justin’s art. Whether it was a simple drawing or more abstract paintings – Justin had his own unique style and he never stopped amazing Brian with his work.

Inside Justin’s studio, Justin guided Brian over to a big canvas leaning against one of the walls, hidden behind some white clothing. Smiling, but with a nervous glint in his eyes, Justin pulled the cover away, revealing what was hidden under it.

“Merry Christmas, Brian”, he said, as Brian stared at what was before him.

It was a huge painting, one of the biggest he’d ever seen Justin do. He wondered for a moment how Justin had been able to work on this painting without him noticing it. It had to have taken a lot of time and energy to paint something this huge.

He couldn’t take his eyes away from it. It was… amazing. It was colorful. Justin had used every color imaginable, except black. The black and grey tones that were always present in his work were completely gone, and instead Brian was looking at a myriad of bright and vivid colors. Happy colors. He had to smile just looking at the painting before him. This was made by someone who was pouring all his happiness out onto the canvas in an explosion of colors and life.

Justin was beside him, he slipped an arm around Brian’s waist, eager to hear what Brian thought. When Brian didn’t say anything, he started to explain.

“I’ve called it Brian”, he said softly. “This is how I feel when I’m with you.”

Brian looked at Justin for a minute, then back at the painting. He felt too overwhelmed to talk. Not only was the painting possibly the best work he’d ever see Justin do, but the feeling it gave off was almost too much. It was breathtaking.

Brian pulled Justin into his arms, still unable to speak. He crushed Justin’s smaller body against his own, feeling Justin’s heartbeat against his own chest, the blond hair tickling his nose. Once again he felt amazed by the fact that Justin was still here. After all Brian’s attempts to push him away, after all the ups and downs they’d had over the years, he was still here. And this painting… it was nothing more than a huge, colorful and breathtaking love declaration.

“Thank you”, he whispered against Justin’s hair and he could almost feel the younger man’s smile against his chest. He pulled away and saw Justin’s face covered with that sunshine smile that could light up a room alone. Unable to stop himself from smiling back, he rested his hand at the back of Justin’s neck, and pulled him in for a kiss.

“Let’s go back to bed”, he whispered in Justin’s hair after a kiss that left them both breathless. “I was thinking we could start another new tradition tonight.”

“Sounds interesting”, Justin grinned as he followed Brian upstairs, curious to see what kind of tradition Brian had in mind.
